Abstract

388,119. Thermal switches. WEST & CO., Ltd., A. and PAVITT, F. J., Lewes Road, Brighton. Oct. 29, 1931, No. 29993. [Classes 38 (iii) and 38 (v).] A thermal switch, which may be used for overload protection or in connection with motor starters to change over after a time interval from star to delta connections, comprises a bimetallic strip 1 held in compression between its ends and adapted to move over dead-centres with a snap action on change of temperature. The strip is of S shape and carries a contact 4 normally resting on a contact 5 carried by an adjustable lever 5b. The strip is heated by current passing between contacts 2, 3 and through the strip, and a resistance may be arranged in parallel. On heating, the strip snaps to the right, a portion 1b of it then engaging a stop rod 6. In this position the contact 4, which has left the contact 5, may engage another contact 15.
