387,485. Drawing. OLDFIELD, T., 37D, Beverley Terrace, Boothtown Road, Halifax, Yorkshire. Jan. 5, 1932, No. 270. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Dies ; making golf clubs.-Tubes especially for golf-club handles are tapered by rotating them between segmental dies 1, 2 each having a peripheral groove 3 of semi-circular cross section and gradully decreasing in diameter according to the taper to be produced, the dies being slowly rotated in contact with the work and traversed along it. The dies are supported on vertical shafts on a saddle 8 movable on longitudinal guides 9. A chuck 29<A> for supporting the work is mounted in a stationary headstock 29, and is rotated from a shaft 28, which also rotates the dies through gearing, a shaft 21, gears 20, 19, a shaft 18, worm 17, and further gearing to drive shafts 4, 5, and effects the longitudinal movement of the saddle through a gear train, a shaft 39, a worm 40, a gear 41, and a gear 42 meshing with a rack 43. The rotation of the dies and the saddle traverse are automatically stopped when a projection 51 strikes a stop 50, first moving a rod 45 to the right to disengage gear 20 from gear 19 by a lever 48 and, when this lever strikes an abutment 46, moving a rod 52 to the left so that a recess 55 thereon comes beneath a projection 54 on the housing of the worm 40 to permit it to drop from engagement with its wheel 41. Manual means for returning the carriage, rotating the dies, and resetting the stop devices are included. The tapering may be effected in one operation, or the second half of a tube one inch in diameter may first be tapered, for example, by the half of the dies producing a taper varying from one inch to three-quarters of an inch, and then the whole tube tapered to the minimum diameter of one-half an inch, the dies and tube being marked in equal divisions in such successive operations. Two or more sets of dies may be carried in one machine for simultaneous operation, and each die may have several grooves in its periphery for different tapers. The rotation of the dies may be stopped while their longitudinal traverse continues, to produce tubes of irregular taper.
