Abstract

386,645. Insertedblade cutters. HEIDE, H. C., 2, Broad Street Buildings, Liverpool Street, London.-(O.K. Tool Co., Inc. ; 233, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.) May 13, 1931, No. 14132. [Class 83 (iii).] An inserted-blade cutter, such as a face-milling cutter or slotting, broaching, shaping, or turning tool of the kind claimed in Specification 386,307, consists of a holder 1 having recesses 2 which are tapered in both radial and axial directions and are each adapted to receive a cutter element 3 and locking-wedge 4 and additional means are provided for positively locking the cutter and wedge together against relative movement. The face a of the cutter is inclined to the face b at the radial taper, which is approximately 2‹ while the face c of the wedge is inclined to the face d at the axial taper which is approximately 5‹. The wedge member, Fig. 8, is formed with a ledge 5 which supports the cutter against inward radial loads. The face d of each wedge and the corresponding face of each recess are respectively formed with serrations 6, 7 which prevent radial movement of the wedges. The wedge and cutter are also positively locked against relative movement by the engagement of a pin 8 on the wedge with one of a series of notches 9 on the cutter. After assembling the cutter and wedge, the combined unit is inserted to its slot and tapped into position. The assembled cutter is then ground to size. For fine radial adjustments of the cutters, the combined cutter and wedge units are removed and adjusted radially over one or more serrations. This adjustment also causes an axial shift of the cutter blade sufficient to allow of re-grinding and trueing to size. For very fine adjustment, the sets of serrations round the holder may be displaced from the preceding set by a fraction of the pitch of the serrations and the compound units may be advanced one or more slots round the holder periphery. For adjusting the blades themselves axially without disturbing the radial adjustment the blade may be advanced over the wedge by multiples of the distance between the notches 9 as shown in Fig. 11. Other forms of engagement between the cutter and the ledge 5 may be employed to obtain finer adjustment in this way. Fig. 13 shows an adaptation of the invention to single point tool 16.
