[Class 3 (ii).] Photographs carrying advertisements on their rear sides are provided round their edges with deep grooves which appear as projecting ridges at the rear and prevent the photograph from being gummed to any other surface, thus obscuring the advertisement. Fig. 1 shows a sheet of cardboard 1 carrying four portraits 2 .. 5, behind each of which an advertisement is to be attached. This sheet is arranged over the gummed sheet carrying the advertisements in a press, Fig. 5, comprising four female dies 16 and four corresponding male dies 22. The dies 16 are mounted on springs 20 within recesses 18, and are provided with grooves 17 which, in conjunction with corresponding parts 23 in relief on the dies 22, produce the grooves round the portraits. Separation of the portraits 1s effected by cutting edges 27 arranged round the dies 22, and the slidable member 21 carrying these dies is provided with apertures 24 containing gas or electric heating means for softening the gum and effecting the adhesion of the advertisements. The cardboard frame 11, Fig. 1, which remains in the press when the portraits have been removed, carries identifying marks to show which advertisements have been attached to the portraits. As an alternative to the above process, the advertisements may be printed directly on the rear of the photograph by means of a rotary press arranged within or outside the camera, in which case the press would merely form the grooves.
