Abstract
Decorated blocks of thermoplastic materials are made by compressing the body material in a mould with a die formed with the pattern in relief, then filling up the hollows thus formed with decorative material and finally compressing to complete the article. The die preferably is heated during the pressing operation. The block may receive a final upper layer of transparent material to form a finished surface. In some cases top and bottom dies may be used to form indentations for patterns on both sides of the article simultaneously. In some cases the indented blocks may be stored and receive the decorative materials at a later time. A thicker complete article may be made up by uniting several of the blocks by pressure. The finished articles may be hardened by immersion in or exposure to formalin, acid vapours or heated air, and may be chipped or worked to special shapes. In a modified process a die having the pattern indented thereon is employed, the indentations being filled with colour which is transferred to a sheet of paper or the like and allowed to set thereon. The paper is inverted over the soft body material in the mould and the whole pressed together. Reference is made to the treatment of horn and to moulding buttons by this process. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 25155/98, [Class 22, Cements &c.], 111,353, 306,945, [both in Class 93, Ornamenting], and 354,834.
