Abstract

385,327. Preserving wood. POLYSU, C., 11, Strasse Calonfirescu, Bucharest. June 19, 1931, No. 17814. Convention date, Aug. 29, 1930. [Class 140.] Wood is impregnated with a liquid whilst the liquid is subjected to alternating pressures of short duration, each pressure variation covering the whole range of pressure employed and the wood being completely immersed in the liquid throughout each pressure variation. In an example, railway cross-ties of beechwood are immersed in a mixture of creosote and an oil obtained as a residue in petroleum distillation and subjected to four complete alternations of pressure from normal to ten atmospheres, the duration of each period of pressure being 25 minutes and the alternations succeeding each other by 50 minutes. The treatment cylinder is emptied of liquid and refilled after each alternation. In a modification, the cylinder is kept filled with the liquid and the pressure is varied from normal to eight atmospheres, the pressure treatment lasting eight minutes and the alternations succeeding one another by 10 minutes. The treatment may also be applied to railway switch-ties, or poles for telephone, telegraph or electric conduits, &c. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 17002/09 and 317,427, [both in Class 140, Waterproof &c. fabrics].
