Wood, treating for preserving &c.-A process for preserving wood consists in immersing the wood in boiling oil under a vacuum, drawing off the oil, subjecting to a vacuum, then forcing in the impregnating -liquid, and finally subjecting to a vacuum to expel the excess of liquid from the wood. The boiling oil and the impregnating- liquid may be forced repeatedly through the impregnating-cylinders in a cycle, the oil being kept at 100-110‹ C., and the impregnating-liquid at 100-130‹ C. by passing through external heating- apparatus. The impregnating-liquid consists of a tar-oil containing antiseptic, such as carbolic acid, and a mineral oil distillate called blue oil." obtained from petroleum after the lightest part has been distilled off. This blue oil is used as the boiling oil in the first step of the process. The oils are transferred from oil-tanks d to a measuring-device e, f, where they are mixed in proper proportions, and are then passed through heating- apparatus i to a tank g below the impregnating- cylinders b. A vacuum is created in the cylinders b and the hot oil rises from the tank g around the wood ; it is then pumped out of the cylinders and through heating-apparatus, and again forced into the cylinders. -After this treatment with the hot oil, a vacuum is applied to draw off moisture and vapours, which are condensed in cylinders k. The impregnating-liquid is then introduced under pressure, and after sufficient has been absorbed, a vacuum is applied to draw off excess.
