Abstract
Anhydrous titanium dioxide is ground wet or dry and brought into suspension by means of an inorganic or organic dispersing agent, whereafter the fine particles are separated from the coarser ones, as by decantation or filtration, and recovered by coagulation. The coarser particles are mixed with a fresh charge for further treatment. Sodium or potassium hydroxide, ammonia, or alkali silicates are the preferred dispersing agents, and they may be present during grinding and in such quantity that the slurry has a pH value of 9 to 12. Coagulation of the fine particles may be effected by neutralization, for instance with sulphuric acid, or by barium sulphate which remains in the product, or by magnesium sulphate. Additional dispersing agents which may be used include alkali carbonates, tri-alkali phosphates, sodium stearate, and certain "wetting" agents such as phenol and sodium sulphoricinate. Titanium oxide calcined with the addition of alkali metal sulphate may be treated by the process, or the product thereof be subjected to dry grinding in the manner described in Specification 354,799. Specifications 225,593, 252,262, and 275,672, [all in Class 1 (iii), Oxides &c., Metallic], also are referred to.
