[Class 86.] A machine for treating margarine or other edible fats comprises an assemblage of heating, kneading and beating units assembled into a whole, the individual units being removable so that the machine can be altered to deal with different fats ; means are provided for feeding the machine at a predetermined rate. In the form shown, a feeding hopper a is furnished with a pair of parallel worms b<1> the speed of which can be varied to feed the fats at a predetermined rate to a worm b<3> which forces the material through the assembled units B<1> .. B4, C<1> .. C<6>, D. In the arrangement illustrated, the material is forced through a kneading unit B<1>, a number of heating units C<1 >.. C<4>, further kneading and heating units B2, B3, B4, C<5>, C<6>, and finally through a beating unit D. The kneading units comprise cylindrical casings in which works an elliptical kneader d<1>; the kneader leaves a constant clearance between its edge and the wall of the casing. The heating units comprise concentric pipes f, having inlets S<1> and outlets S<2>, radial beaters c being provided at each side of the pipes. The beating element comprises a casing with concentric, slotted walls u between which rotates a cagelike structure g. The casings of the kneading elements are divided transversely and the kneaders are carried by sleeves mounted on a main shaft. The casings have side arms provided with slots threaded on to longitudinal frame members and then bolted up. By these means the number of different units in any machine may be varied. The feeding worms bl may be replaced by rollers between which the material is fed, the rollers being adjustable to and from one another and provided with scrapers.
