MANUFACTURE OF COCO A PASTE- Specification of Letters Patent.

To 117/ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH ERXST FERDI- xaxn Xl'iL'MAXX, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of \Yandsbek, near Hamburg. in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to the Manufacture of Cocoa Paste, of which the following is a specification.
' The presentinvcntion relates to improvements in roller-mills for the manufacture of cocoa paste from fat-containing cocoa-beans.
The object of the improvements is to provide a roller-mill \\ltlclt allows of the passingof the cocoa-beans and the pulp obtained there- .from between pairs of roughened rollers arranged vertically below and in close proximity to each other and the conveying of the matertal that has passed said roller pairs in a latparts throughoutthe several figures.
In a suitable frame A are mounted several (say two) pairs of rollers 11, one pairof rollers a vertically beneath the other pan.

roller is an additional one to effect the grinding to a liner degree and at the same time not as a transfer roller, thereby forming the equivalent of a six-roller mill, dispensing with one roll and a pair of scrapers. In order to transfer the paste to the roll 1:, the right-hand lower roller 11 rotates faster than the lefthand one and lateral roller 0 rotates faster than the said right-hand lower roller (1. Beside the rollers, heat-irig-chambers 7;, which may con veniently be of curved formation, may be arranged in the manner shown by dotted lines.

A special feature of the feed-hopper is the provision of heating-passages J in or along the walls of the hopper and also transversely across the same, Fig. 2, these passages being connected one with theot her by means of ribs or plates I1 so as to insure a better distribution of the heat. By means of those heatingpassages (Z and ribs or plates 11*, which act as radiators, the cocoa-beans may be preparatorily heated in such a manner as to render any special heating of the rollers 11 1; unnecessary. Nevertheless the heating-chambers b may be provided in proximity to the rollers for use in case of need. The heating may be effected by means of steam or hot water, these heating media being conducted through the heating passages or chambers in any convenient manner. (Not shown in the drawings.) The cocoa-beans introduced into the feedhopper (Z first of all fall, either ina hot or cold condition, according to requirements, between the two upper rollers r1, which break up the woody fibers of the beans, while the cocoa v butter is speedily melted owing to the great heat. The pulverized and melted material is removed from the rollers u by the scrapers c and falls upon the second pair of rollers u, where it is subjected to a further reducing and grinding process, and finally it is taken up by the lateral roller 0, from which it is removed by the scraper c as cocoa paste. By reason of the increasing speed of the three lower rollers the paste is taken from one to the other, working over to the roller 0, where it is scraped off.
If it is desired to obtain a somewhat coarse cocoa paste. two pairs of rollers arranged one below the other will be sufiieient. They'may be supplemented by one or more lateral rollers, according to the degree of fineness desired. The constructional details of the means described above may be modilied in numerous ways-for example, the heating of the rollers may be effected in various manners, or, as above stated, ma y be dispensed with altogether if the cocoa-beans are supplied in a heated state.
Owing to the fact that the cocoa-beans and the pulp arising therefrom are. carried between and around the rollers in a short path for the purpose of being converted into cocoa site each roller to heat the material on the 25 mass, the process of conversion is so speedily efiected that the paste does not lose any'or nearly any of the aroma.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 15-
1. In a machine of the class described, the

2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a hollow feed-hopper for the reception and circulation of a heating medium therethrough; of a pair of crushingrollers beneath the hopper, a radiator opporollers, a second pair of crushing-rollers below the first pair, a lateral roller cooperating with one of the latter to form a series of three rollers and a radiator opposite each end roller of the series, substantially as described.
- 3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a feed-hopper having hollow walls and a hollow longitudinal partition connecting opposite hollow walls and transverse solid partitions, whereby the feed-hopper can be heated by means of hot water or steam, a feed-rollf' below and at one side of the hopper, a set of cooperating crushing-rollers below the hopper, and a second set of cooperating crushing-rollers below the first set and containing a greater number of rollers, and a heat-radiator opposite each end of each set of rollers, substantially as described.
