Abstract

384,918. Lubricating percussive drills. INGERSOLL-RAND CO., 15, Exchange Place, Jersey City, New Jersey, U.S.A. June 14, 1932, No. 16795. Convention date, April 29. [Class 12 (ii).] In a percussive rock drill having a feed screw z engaging a feed nut 2 mounted in a lug 4 on the casing, oil is conveyed directly to the interengaging threads through a passage 12 in the casing, an annular groove 11, and passages 10 in the nut. The drill comprises a bush O receiving the hammer extension H of the piston G and having an extension L receiving a tool chuck J, the piston, and with it the chuck, being caused to rotate by a rifle-bar g cooperating with the piston and carrying pawls h engaging a ratchet ring e. An annular oil chamber P formed on the exterior of the bush O communicates with the passage k supplying pressure fluid from the throttle valve j to the valve chamber X through passages s and annular grooves p, q on the bush and passages o, r in the cylinder B and ring e whereby, when the drill is in operation, oil is forced from the chamber P along the cylinder into annular grooves u whence it passes through passages w into a passage v in the cylinder which communicates with the passage 12 and also through a passage x with the surface of the bar g. When pressure fluid is being admitted to the rear end of the cylinder, some fluid flows into the passage v, and when such end is exhausting this fluid returns to the cylinder carrying oil to lubricate the bar g and associated parts, while some of the oil is carried through the passages 10, 11, 12 to the screw z.
