Abstract

Bowling greens and other grass areas for games are provided at one end with a valved underground supply main and at the other with a similar outlet main, the mains being connected by a number of pipes, which are perforated at their upper surfaces. The space between the connecting pipes is filled with water-retaining material such as well compacted clay, marl or binding gravel, and above the pipes is a layer of ashes, mould or sand. The pipes can be used for draining or for supplying water or air under pressure or liquids or gases to destroy worms or other pests or for heating the area. The perforations in the pipes are covered with material, such as woven asbestos, slate or porous earthenware, which will prevent the entrance of solid matter. The pipes may be in sections with apertures left at the upper portions of the junctions. The pipes may be rectangular in cross sections and close enough to form a support for the layer above.
