[Class 140.] A method of applying stripes of colouring material to sheets or webs of paper or fabric comprises feeding a thin ribbon of liquid coating material on to a travelling band of paper &c. The ribbon of coating material is fed from an aperture in a member in contact with the travelling web, the aperture being on the forward side of the line of contact, and the inclination of the member to the web being variable to control the amount of material applied. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a metal trough consisting of walls 1, 2, Fig. 2, having one or more holes 3 formed at the lower angle. The general arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. The web is drawn from the roll 13, passes over a roll 14 and under the trough 2. The trough is secured to a bar 6 to which is secured at each end a bracket 7. The brackets 7 are pivotally connected to brackets 8 which are fixed to the framework of the machine, a limited angular adjustment of the trough being permitted by the pivots and by means of bolts passing through holes in one bracket and through arcuate slots in the other bracket. The colouring matter is confined in the trough by means of rubber bulkheads 5. After passing under the trough the web passes through a heated drying chamber 17 and is then received on a roll 15. Different colours may be applied by different apertures by suitably dividing up the trough by means of a number of bulkheads 5, or, in a modification, the trough may be divided by a longitudinal partition 20, Fig. 5, some of the apertures 24 leading to one side of the partition, while other apertures 23 lead to the other side, different colours being disposed on each side of the partition.
