Abstract

The nitrogenous higher paraffin derivatives prepared by treating halogenated paraffins containing more than eight carbon atoms with ammonia, according to Specification 339,962, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are sulphonated. The products are stated to be emulsifying agents. In examples: (1) six atoms of chlorine are introduced into hard paraffin (mean mol. weight 367), which is then reacted in an autoclave with alcoholic ammonia; by filtering off ammonium chloride and distilling the alcohol, a crude product is obtained which is treated first with sulphuric acid monohydrate in the presence of trichlorethylene and then with oleum; the resulting oil is washed, neutralized and freed from solvent; acid precipitates the free sulphonic acid, which when dry, is a brownish brittle substance; (2) the same starting material that is used in example 1, or the purified product obtained by extracting the weakly alkaline solution of its hydrochloride, and precipitating the extracted solution with caustic alkali, is sulphonated in chlorbenzene with sulphuric monohydrate; the use of the di-, tri-, tetra- and penta-chlor derivatives of higher paraffin hydrocarbons as starting materials is referred to; (3) trichlorinated hard paraffin is decomposed with alcoholic ammonia and sulphonated with chlorsulphonic acid; the resulting viscous product is further sulphonated with more chlorsulphonic acid, when it becomes more mobile. By washing to free from acid, and neutralizing a brown oil is obtained which on dilution lathers strongly. Specification 371,822 is referred to.ALSO:The nitrogenous higher paraffin derivatives prepared by treating halogenated paraffins containing more then eight carbon atoms with ammonia, according to Specification 339,962, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are sulphonated.
