Abstract

383,199. Electro-osmose. FJELL, K. K., Fjell, near Bergen, Norway. May 11, 1932, No. 13611. [Class 41.] An apparatus for drying animal, vegetable and mineral raw materials by electro-osmose combined with pressure comprises a container 1 the inside of which is provided with narrow vertical notches 5 which do not pierce the wall; the notches are covered with thin porous material 6 such as linen cloth or thin clay plates and communicate at the bottom with a gutter 14. One electrode 11 rests on the base 9 and the other electrode 10 is supported beneath the press-plate 12 ; all these parts are perforated like a sieve. Additional electrodes may be arranged in the wall of the container and in the interior of the mass to be dried. The electrodes may be covered with thin porous material ; this material and the material 6 should be less conductive than the material to be dried. The container may be built up from short cylinders secured together by bolts 3 and ribbons 2. The container if made in one piece is provided with doors for supply and withdrawal of the material.
