[Class 19.] A toothbrush having a pick displaceably mounted between the bristles as described in the parent Specification is modified in that the pick is held rigid when in a position for use, and is flexibly mounted, so that it can share the movement of the bristles, when not in a position for use. The pick 34 is provided with a flanged hollow cylindrical base 3<3> and is connected to the brush head by a gut string 81 passing through the base 3<3> and provided at its outer end with a stop 8<2>. The base 3<3> is adapted to be engaged by a slot 22 in a lever 21 pivoted at 20 to the handle 1 of the brush. A spring 11<1> surrounds the string 8<1>, one end of the spring being secured at the bottom of the recess in the base 3<3> and the other end passing through a slot 24 in the lever 21. To project the pick from the bristles, the free end of the lever 21 is operated by the finger of the user against the pressure of a spring 7<1>, whereupon the base 33 is engaged by the slot 22 and the pick projected until the stop 8<2> engages the base 33. When the lever 21 is released, it is returned to normal position by the spring 71, during which movement the slot 22 disengages the base 3<3> and the slot 24 moves relatively to the end 112 of spring 11<1> until the bend 113 is reached ; further movement of the lever then retracts the spring 11<1>, and hence the pick, until the spring abuts against the handle.
