Abstract

382,623. Joint-making packing. MOULTON, F., Snodland, Kent. July 27, 1931, No. 21460. [Class 122 (iii).] Packing 11 suitable for spigot and socket joints comprises spun fibrous material such as hemp or jute which is sheathed with solid or semi-solid bitumen. The packing 11 is arranged around the spigot 10 in the socket 12. A ring of lead or lead wool is caulked into the socket. A hemp or jute rope is passed through heated bitumen to form a sheath, Fig. 2, or the individual strands may be coated before they are twisted. The coating may be applied by painting or spraying, and then cooled. The packing may be used in earthenware spigot and socket joints.
