[Class 51 (ii).] The anchoring for coke and chamber ovens according to Specification 362,544 is modified by the provision of inclined struts 8 embedded in concrete blocks 11 and serving to transmit the load on the horizontal girders 6, 7 to the ground. The struts 8 are connected to the booms 16 of the girders 6, 7 by gusset plates 12 to which are riveted vertical tension members 9, the latter being secured at their lower ends to beams 17 inserted in the projecting ends 5 of the foundation plate 4. The girders 6, 7 are made of iron lattice-work and are rigidly connected to one end of the oven battery by a tie-bar. The connections between the buckstays 1 and the booms 16 comprise springs 19, each of which, in the form shown in Fig. 4, is secured at one end to a bracket 25 on a buck-stay and bears, at the other end, against a nut 22 on a screwed spindle 21, the latter being attached to the boom 16 by a nut 23. A modification is described in which a single spring 19 is provided for a pair of adjacent buck-stays 1. The compression of the springs 19 is adjusted by the nuts 22, 23, and the arrangement is such that, to compensate for the greater horizontal thrust on the coke-bench side of the battery, due to operation of the discharge ram 10, the springs 19 on this side are under greater compression. The same result may also be obtained by providing stronger springs on the coke-bench side. On account of the unsymmetrical loads on the girders 6, 7 due to the difference in compression of the springs, the girders 7 are either of weaker construction or their load-transmitting supports 8, 9 are spaced farther apart.
