Abstract

382,471. Electromagnets. BENIT, H., 54, Rue La B÷etie, Paris. Jan. 5, 1932, No. 243. [Class 35.] In a closing-device for pocket and other books, envelopes, files, boxes, portfolios, handbags, &c., a magnet and its armature or several magnets are arranged on or within the article so that the mutual attraction of their opposite poles maintains the article in a closed condition. In the case of thin books, where the air gap is small, a flat magnet may be attached to each cover, but where the books are thick the ends of the magnets are bent over either to overlap each other with their opposed poles almost in contact, or bent over and provided with square, round, &c. interfitting projections. The magnets may be provided with teeth and holes for engagement with the covers. A sheet of cardboard may be gummed to each side of the magnets. The magnets may be blade springs of high retentivity steel such as tungsten or cobalt'steel, and they may be varnished, nickelled, chromium-plated,' gilded, &c. to prevent oxidation. Fig. 8 shows several magnets applied to thin covers of a file &c. Fig. 9 shows a box with a magnet curved to the shape and fitted in the structure of the body, and another magnet disposed in the lid.
