Abstract
382,297. Screw propellers. MELCHER, F., 146, Gentzgasse, Vienna. July 21, 1931, No. 20861. [Class 114.] In oppositely running twin or multiple propellers a, b the local pitch angles of the pressure sides of the alternatively right- and left-hand propellers are chosen that they are greater by a constant angle of incidence than the corresponding angles which correspond to the tangent function of the ratio of the local speed of admission divided by the corresponding circumferential speed. The speed of admission of the element which is foremost in the direction of travel, is equivalent to the speed of the craft less the local wake and that if all the other successive elements is equivalent to the product of the effective outlet pitch by the number of revolutions per time unit of the adjacent front element. In setting out the propellers the relative entry and discharge speeds of the medium for both for and aft propellers is calculated point for point. After plotting the radius vectors of the relative entry and discharge speeds the pitches of the propeller can be calculated. The propellers are further characterized in that their clearance g is about 5 per cent of their diameter and the diameter of the rear propellers is diminished to conform to the contracted flow line conditioned by the forward propeller.
