Feb. 5, 1932, No. 3515. Convention date, Feb. 6, 1931. [Class 103 (i).] A combined eddy current and friction brake for vehicles comprises in the form shown the brake drum a of an internally-expanding shoe brake secured to a hub n on the shaft w of an electric traction motor of the vehicle, the outer part b of the drum forming the shortcircuit rotor of the eddy-current brake and being provided for this purpose with a cagewinding e. The stationary part of the eddycurrent brake includes poles d which as shown may be hook-shaped and have an exciting winding c. The cage may consist of copper rods with resistance lugs and it can be built into laminated sheet metal bodies. The fan f of the motor may direct cooling air on to the brake by means of a cowl h or through openings in the bracket l. The rotating parts of the brake may also be constructed as a fan.
