Abstract

1,135,764. Motor wheels. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. 8 Feb., 1966 [25 Feb., 1965], No. 8136/65. Heading B7H. [Also in Division H2] A vehicle wheel, e.g. for railways, is driven and/or braked by a planar - type machine whose rotor 2 is incorporated into the wheel and whose stator 9 has windings lying in radial slots. The rotor may be of mild steel and may have an aluminium squirrel cage. The stator is carried on an additional bearing 14 on the wheel axle which, as it moves upwardly in its slide 3 under load, interacts with a linkage 7 to rotate the stator on an inclined groove 11 to bring it closer to the rotor. The stator may be a sector, as shown, or a complete circle, and may be signal or polyphase.
