Abstract
A mixture comprising diethylene glycol or other polyalkylene glycol with other liquid polyhydric alcohols is nitrated whilst well agitating the mass and maintaining the temperature below 20 DEG C., and preferably below 15 DEG C., by means of an acid mixture containing an excess of nitric acid, the amount of water being 2-8 per cent (preferably 3-5,2 per cent) when nitrating a mixture containing no glycerine, and 3,8-10 per cent (preferably 4,5-7 per cent) when nitrating a mixture containing no glycerine, and the amount of sulphuric acid 44-54 per cent (preferably 51-52 per cent) when nitrating a mixture containing glycerine and 39-55 per cent (preferably 45-53 per cent) when nitrating a mixture containing no glycerine. The separation of the mixed nitrates may be accomplished by letting the mixture stand in the cold, and drawing off and washing the upper liquid layer. The following examples are given. For the nitration of mixtures containing glycerine and diethylene glycol in the proportions (a) 80 : 20, (b) 60 : 40, (c) 35 : 65, and (d) 20 : 80, there are used respectively acid mixtures comprising nitric acid, sulphuric acid, and water in the following proportions: (a) 46 : 50 : 4, (b) 46,4 : 49,4 : 4,2, (c) 46,6 : 48,5 : 4,9, and (d) 46,9 : 48 : 5,1. A mixture containing 10 parts diethylene glycol and 90 parts ethylene glycol is nitrated with nitric acid 42,5 per cent, sulphuric acid 53 per cent, water 4,5 per cent. A mixture of equal parts diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol is nitrated by means of nitric acid 44,82 per cent, sulphuric acid 50,8 per cent, water 4,38 per cent. Mixtures comprising glycerine, ethylene glycol, and diethylene glycol in the proportions (a) 65 : 30 : 5, and (b) 50 : 40 : 10, are nitrated by means of acid mixtures containing nitric acid, sulphuric acid, and water in the proportions (a) 44,9 : 51,3 : 3,8, and 44,8 : 51,4 : 3,8, respectively. The diethylene glycol may be replaced by other polyalkylene glycols such as di-propylene glycol and ethylene-propylene glycol. The products have a low freezing-point, and blend well with nitrocellulose for making smokeless propellent powders.
