Abstract
Nitroglycerine, nitroglycol and similar liquid nitric esters, or mixtures thereof are obtained by a continuous process in a series of reaction vessels, in which process a proportion of the polyhydric alcohol or mixture of such, is added to each of the vessels, and the whole of a suitable quantity of nitrating acid is added to the first vessel only, the reaction products being passed from each vessel to the next in the series, and the proportion of polyhydric alcohol added to the first vessel being insufficient to produce an acid composition having a deleterious effect on the nitric ester in contact therewith. In the second and succeeding vessels, intensive cooling is adopted to minimize the effect of waste acid on the product, and the second vessel may be made considerably smaller than the first, while the rate of outflow remains the same. In preparing nitroglycerine. The proportion of glycerine added to the first vessel is preferably not more than three-quarters of the total glycerine used. According to an example, the nitrating of glycerol is effected in two vessels, the whole of the acid and four-fifths of the glycerol being added continuously to the first vessel, while the remaining one-fifth of glycerol is added to the reaction mixture after it has passed into the second vessel. Both vessels are kept at 7 DEG C., and the product isolated in a continuous separator.
