Abstract
381,911. Projectile fuzes. RHEINISCHE METALLWAARENUND MASCHINENFABRIK, 195, Ulmenstrasse, Derendorf, Dusseldorf, Germany. July 11, 1932, No. 19596. Convention date, July 11, 1931. [Class 9 (i).] Relates to fuzes provided with contacts adapted to co-operate with contacts on a gun or bomb-dropping apparatus to transfer electric energy into the fuzes when the projectile is discharged, and consists mainly in arranging the fuze contacts to be movable and to press yieldingly on fixed contacts in their path on the gun or bomb-dropping apparatus. The movable contacts may be released from a sealing mass of fusible or combustible material removed or destroyed by the gun gases and may be moved out of safety position and subsequently out of active position by springs, centrifugal force, or inertia. As shown in Fig. 1 a contact y is pivoted at g<1> on an insulating plug h in a fuze body containing two condensers a, e, a resistance f, a detonator d, an impact switch b, and a discharge tube c. An inertia switch l connects the condenser e to the lever g while this swings out and makes contact with a fixed contact on the gun during the period of acceleration of the projectile. Subsequently the switch l connects the condenser e to the resistance f and the charge received by the condenser e is gradually passed to the condenser a. The fixed contact on the gun is a ring m, Fig. 10, secured with insulating rings p, p between two members o<1>, o<2> clamped together by bolts o<3> and secured to the muzzle of a gun R. Holes m<2>, o<6>, o', and baffles m<1>, o<4>, o<5>, deflect the gases away from the insulating rings p. p. Several modifications of these devices are described including orrangements having two fixed contacts and one or two movable contacts, arrangements in which a ring on the projectile fuze is movable laterally or longitudinally to touch a fixed contact in a bomb-dropping apparatus from which bombs are dropped with their axes horizontal, and outside condensers for charging the condenser e to a fixed voltage and the condenser a to a lower voltage which can be varied according to the time it is desired to set the fuze for.
