Abstract
380,096. Gas meters. BINGHAM, J. H., The Wakehams, Dorney Common, Buckinghamshire, and GLOVER & CO., Ltd., G., Ranelagh Meter Works, Royal Avenue, Chelsea, London. March 6, 1931, Nos. 9098 and 13651. [Class 54.] In dry gas meters, in which the valves 13 move on centre lines intersecting at right-angles at the axis 10 of the valve operating spindle, which is driven through a crank 22 by oscillatory arms 15, 16 moved by the meter diaphragms, the angle subtended at the axis of the spindle by a line joining the axis 17, 18 of the oscillating arms is not a right-angle and the diaphragms are moved with a difference of phase of 90‹ on the path of the crank 22 driven by the oscillating arms, so that reversal of each valve takes place simultaneously with reversal of the direction of movement of the corresponding arm. Fig. 1 shows the known arrangement, the rods 17, 18 carrying lateral arms 23, 24 connected to the centre plates of the diaphragms the crank pin 21 being connected to the arms 15, 16 by links 19, 20, and the valves being operated through rods 14 by a crank 12 on the spindle 10. Fig. 3 shows one form according to the invention, in which the arms 15, 16 oscillate on stub shafts 17a, 18a displaced towards the left, extensions of the chords of the arcs moved through by the connections 25, 26 of the arms to the links 19, 20 intersecting at right-angles at the point 10. The oscillating rods 17, 18 are connected to the arms 15, 16 by arms 27, 28 and links 30, 31 forming parallel motion linkworks. The arms 15, 16 may be mounted to oscillate independently about a single pivotal support, Fig. 5 (not shown). Fig. 4 shows a form in which the arms are connected to separate crank pins 21, 21a, the crank arm 22 having an offset arm 34, or a double crank may be used. The pins 21, 21a are, with the parts in the position shown by the full lines, placed equidistant from a line 32 drawn at 45‹ to the perpendicular to the line 17, 18 through the centre 10. Fig. 7 shows a form similar to Fig. 4, in which the links 19, 20 are dispensed with, the arms 36, 37 being slotted and engaging separate crank pins 21, 21a. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, an auxiliary spindle 40 carries the crank arm 22 and is connected to the spindle 10 by toothed gearing 41, 42, 43. The idle wheel 41 may be carried on a quadrant or arm so that its position can be altered, or coupling rods, chain or belt gearing may be used.
