Abstract

Wads for cigarettes are built up as a continuous rod by mechanical forming means while moving axially, the rod being cut into lengths before or after insertion in cigarette paper tubes. The rod may be formed by plaited, braided, woven, or twisted strips of paper or other material, or threads or fibres of silk, cellulose or wool. The wads may be formed by (1) helical windings which cross one another, (2) concentric layers of creped paper or fibrous material separated by helical windings of creped paper, (3) concentric paper tubes separated by either helical windings or by woven or plaited sleeves, (4) superposed strips of creped paper with or without layers of filtering material, the strips being of different width and folded longitudinally to produce a cylindrical filling, (5) loose material formed into a continuous rod, (6) a core of woven material around which creped paper or alternate layers of creped or plain paper are spirally wound or (7) bristles laid between a core of twisted threads or wires. The rod may be built around a central core, or it may have its outer edge gummed if it is to be stored before inserting in a cigarette paper tube. Cotton, filter paper, felt or pilose material may also be used.
