379,284. Screw propellers. LANG, A. A. D., Perryfield, Hillingdon, Uxbridge, Middlesex. May 23, 1931, Do. 15304. [Class 114.] A method of forming a laminated wooden screw propeller in which a number of shaped planks a of comparatively soft wood, e.g. spruce, are laid with intervening layers of cement in a die box band subjected to pressure by a ram c sufficient to stress the wood beyond its elastic limit and reduce the planks to about two-thirds of their original height. The grain of the planks is substantially parallel. The planks may be arranged so that the density of the compressed blade varies longitudinally or across a cross section. Reinforcing laminµ may be provided in which the grain is inclined longitudinally, the angle of inclination varying from a maximum at the tip to a minimum at the root. In a modification the planks are curved longitudinally. Torsion may be applied to the blades as well as compression to obtain the desired shape. The root of the blade may be forced through split dies k, m into a tapered ferrule e and allowed to expand therein. In some cases a plug f may be inserted.
