Convention date, Aug. 1, 1930. [Class 79 (v).] In geared mechanism designed to eliminate backlash, an intermediate member, 6 or 7, is provided for each direction of operation of the driving shaft. The halves of a split worm wheel 2, 3 in mesh with a worm 1 are integral with a spindle 4 and sleeve 5 upon which levers 6, 7 are secured. The levers terminate in screwed sockets 8, 9 in which are housed the spherical ends of an elastic link member L containing an end-piece 18 on the part to be actuated such as a drag-link 19. The member L comprises a tube 22, spherical end-pieces 14, in which are carried push pieces 16, and springs 20, 21, which damp thrusts between the levers 6, 7, and the piece 18. Various modified constructions are described in one of which leaf springs are substituted for the levers 6, 7 ; in another, the wheel 2, 3 is replaced by a nut divided either transversely or longitudinally, the halves being connected to the spindle and sleeve by links ; in another, Fig. 10, the springs 20, 21 are disposed as shown in separate tubes ; in another, the knob 18 is housed between springs in the hollow end of the link 19 while an adjustable screw takes the place of the spring link M of Fig. 10. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a modification shown in Fig. 12 (Cancelled) in which only one lever 6 is used ; this is pivoted at 4 and connected by trunnions to one half of a split nut 2, 3, the halves being connected by springs 40 ; in a modification of this form, a circumferential coiled spring bearing at its ends on shoulders on the half-nuts replaces the springs 40. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
