Abstract

378,681. Cathode-ray tubes DOERING, U. W., 45, G³ntzelstrasse, Wilmersdorf, Berlin. Sept. 22, 1931, No. 26505. Convention date, Sept. 24, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] A cathode-ray tube, especially for television purposes, has a mercury-vapour filling, which is developed from a mercury supply by heating the tube. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the tube 1 is surrounded by a coil 2 which can be heated to any desired temperature by supplying current through a variable resistance 6. The tube is preferably provided with a metallic screening cover 3, preferably of iron or other magnetic material, to protect it from electromagnetic or electrostatic effects from the heating current. The screen 3 may be in the form of a wire netting ; if a uniform screen is used it is preferably subdivided by slots. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 2, a separate heating coil 7 is placed in one casing 4 containing the cathode-ray tube, and the casing is filled with iron shavings or iron powder to serve as a screen. In another arrangement, the heating effect necessary for the vaporization of the mercury is obtained by mounting the amplifying or rectifying tubes in the same casing as the cathode-ray tube, the casing being provided with valves for the adjustment of temperature. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 206,081, [Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc &c.].
