Abstract

For the continuous treatment, washing and drying of artificial filaments, threads, &c., the latter on leaving the precipitation bath are wound in the form of a helix on a rotating drum or cage comprising two sets of longitudinal bars, one series being eccentric to the other series and mounted in the manner described below so that the thread is moved along the drum, while each turn of the thread maintains a substantially constant diameter. The drum may be cylindrical or it may be tapered either as a whole or in part so as to enable the threads to be stretched or to compensate for any elongation in their length during treatment. To enable the drum to move forward the turns of the thread, the two series of bars constituting the drum are capable of relative axial and radial movement. Thus, the bars 28, 29, Fig. 2, which may be hollow and of resistant metal, are arranged to alternate in position and are loosely connected by wires to pins 32 projecting from pairs of discs 30, 31 and 34, 35; the discs 30, 31 are inclined to the general axis <PICT:0378467/IV/1> <PICT:0378467/IV/2> of the drum and are mounted on and are driven by inclined shafts 36, 38 connected by a shaft 37; the discs 34, 35 are mounted on bearings on the brackets 40 and are oppositely inclined with respect to the discs 30, 31, and further the axes of the pairs 30, 34 and 31, 35, although approximately in the same plane, are displaced laterally; the frame constituted by the bars 29 and discs 34, 35 is rotated by contact between the bars 28 and the bars 29. For use as in the manufacture of cuprammonium silk, the threads 11, Fig. 1, leaving the caustic soda precipitating bath, are led on to the drum 15, which is preferably inclined, and the liquids necessary for the treatment are preferably allowed to drop on to the drum from pipes 21, 23, being collected in a trough 26 fixed below; acid is fed to the pipe 21, and water for washing to the pipe 23, and the threads pass finally under a blast of warm air from a pipe 25; on leaving the drum the lined threads are collected on the winding device 18, 19, 20. More than one thread may be wound on the drum, the several threads being maintained separate throughout the treatment. For the purpose of collecting separately the treating and washing liquids, a number of suitably disposed troughs are provided and the outer surfaces of the bars 28, 29 are furnished with projecting ribs or with holes to cause the liquids to drop off, or the liquids may be removed by an air jet.
