Abstract

378,435. Electric signalling systems. WHITBY, E., 33, Cropthorne Court, Maida Vale, London, PEDLER, I. A. D., 5, Hampstead Road, Brislington, SELSTON, E. J., York House, Morley Road, Staple Hill, both in Bristol, and LESTER, L. R., Rest Harrow, Old Bracknell, Berkshire. March 9, 1931, No. 7221. [Class 40 (i).] In a remote control system for effecting at a distance operations such as the change over in multiple tariff meters, the actuation of switches, &c., the control currents or impulses are transmitted over a single phase or polyphase alternating current network and are derived from the network through a transformer. As shown in the Figure, the switch 1 of a transmitting device 2 is connected through the secondary winding 3 of a transformer 4 to the coil 5 of an impulse relay 6. The transformer 4 is supplied from one phase of a high-tension network 7. The relay 6 controls the primary of a transformer 10 supplied from the transformer 4, the earthed secondary of the transformer 10 being connected to the network through star-connected impedance coils 12. Instead of the coils 12, condensers may be employed. At the remote station B the high-tension network 7 supplies the low-tension feeders 20, and an impulse receiving relay 16 is connected to the network 7 through star-connected coils 14. The relay 16 controls the primary winding of a transformer 17 supplied from one phase of the lowtension network and the secondary winding is connected to the receiving devices R over the neutral conductor 22, an earth return being utilized. Instead of the earth, a cable sheath or an independent line may be employed. In stations having no neutral conductors, the control currents are transmitted over one or more phase conductors through artificial neutral points. Instead of supplying the transformer 17 from the network 20, it may be supplied from a network having a separate source of supply. Selective control of the devices R may be effected by transmitting characteristic numbers of impulses or impulses having characteristic durations. Instead of employing an impulse receiving relay at station B, a bridging transformer may be used to transmit the control impulses directly from the hightension side to the low-tension side of the network. The Provisional Specification states that control currents may be transmitted over a direct-current network, the impulses being derived from the network or a separate external source.
