Abstract
534,726. Electric control systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., TERRY, R. St. G., and BOWSHER, E. A. H. Feb. 7, 1939, No. 4012. [Class 40(i)] In a system for signalling by uni-directional current over an alternating current power supply network, provision is made for ensuring positive operation of the signal responsive devices for two-way signalling over the network and for relaying signals over linked networks of different types. Fig. 1 shows a system of linked network feeders, the low-voltage feedersLTF at the substation being supplied by intermediate feeders IDF fed by high-tension lines HT and adapted to be connected in parallel by a switch LK. Control of the loads LD1, LD2, is effected by polarized relays PN1, PN2 which are responsive to positive or negative impulses transmitted from the station MS by a key K under the control of relays A, B which connect battery in one or other direction between the neutral of the phase leads IDF and earth. At the substation SUB1 a polarized relay E, connected between earth and an artificial central point provided by the chokes CH controls relays A1, B1 which connect battery in a similar manner to the low tension feeders LTF to relay the impulses to the responsive devices PN1, PN2. In order to prevent short-circuiting of the signals to the signal responsive devices in the neighbourhood of the station SUB2 by the transformer windings at that station, a cell PC is provided which, polarizes in response to D.C. current and impedes the flow of the signal while still offering no appreciable A.C. impedance ; in an alternative arrangement a signal current battery may be connected to the feeders LTF at substation SUB2 in parallel with the battery at station SUB 1 in response to a signal. In a modification, transmitting and receiving relays are provided at each station to facilitate twoway signalling. In a further modification, provision is made for relaying signals over a three-phase system which is Scott-connected to a two-phase system supplying single phase loads. On the three-phase side the system is the same as that shown in Fig. 1, but on the two-phase system the transmitting and receiving devices are connected between the neutral wire and earth while on the single phase system the transmitting equipment is interposed in the earth connection and the receiving relay is connected between the unearthed conductor and earth. Instead of using a battery as the source of D.C. signals, a rectifier resistance combination as described in Specification 472,431 may be employed.
