Abstract

378,179. Boat-lowering gear. AMERICAN SAFETY NAVIGATION CO., 801, Rex Avenue, North East, Canton, Ohio, U.S.A. July 20, 1931,'No. 20731. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1930. [Classes 113 (i) and 115.] The initial luffing movement of the davits releases the gripes and the lashings for the boat covers. The luffing davits 8 are pivoted to the deck at the base of a pillar 3 which carries a guide 10 for one arm 11 of a bell-crank lever pivoted to the davit at 13, the other arm of the lever serving as a support for the boat which is carried on chocks 17, 18. The locking- device for the davits in their inboard position comprises a counterbalanced catch 37, the stem of which is engaged by cam 42, whilst it's tooth 37 is engaged by a hand-operated lever 36, Fig. 1b, in turn locked by a dog 40. The lashings 62 for the cover 60 as well as the fore and aft gripes terminate in rings, all of which are engaged by hooks 67 carried by a rod 66 which is movable longitudinally in a casing 79 carried on the chock supports 12. The gear for moving the rod longitudinally and so releasing the hooks 67 from the rings, comprises a pulley 72 on the end of the rod 66, a pulley 74 on the casing and third centrally disposed pulley 75. A control rope 69 fast on the casing is led round these pulleys in turn and the other end fastened to the standard 3. The initial luffing movement under gravity on release of the fall-gear and the consequent tilting movement of the boat support 12 about the pivot 13 operates through the rope to shift the rod 66 and thus release the boat-cover lashings and gripes. The gripes themselves are carried under the cover and are provided with screwtightening gear. In a modification, Fig. 18, the eyes at the ends of the lashings &c. are hooked over pegs on a shaft 110 which is further provided with spur-wheels 112 engaged by a tooth on an arm 113 brought back to the standard 3 and associated with the locking- gear for the davit so that the tooth 114 is released from the pinion wheel which is then free to rotate and free the lashings.
