Abstract
363,834. Davits. LYDA A. W., 137, South Main Street, North Canton, Ohio U.S.A. Dec. 23, 1930, No. 38711. [Class 115.] A luffing davit is formed in two parts pivoted together and carrying a chock for holding the boat in the inboard position, the parts being automatically released on slackening the falls. The davits are in duplicate and are carried by a frame 18 movable on rollers on a base 11 and guided on a rod 17 attached to brackets 13. Pivotally secured to the base 18 is a framework 20, 21 which at its upper end has pivoted thereto an arm 23. The arm 23 carries at its upper end a guide pulley 25 and on its rear surface another guide pulley 26 over which the falls 43 are led. The upper pivoted arm 23 has a downward extension 36 and is linked to a bracket 31 which is pivotally connected to the frame 20 and carries a clamp member 29. The vertical stem 28 of the keel of the lifeboat is held by the clamp 29 against a bracket 27 on a framework 20 and is guided there by an extension 34 which engages a U-bracket 35. When the falls 43 are slackened, the upper portion 23 first pivots and releases the clamp 29 and then the lower portion pivots at 19 to swing the lifeboat to an outboard position. For limiting the outward swing, a coupling 40 fixed to the deck 41 is passed over pulleys to a point 42 on the member 20. The falls 43 are brought to a common pulley member 70 which is rotatable by gearing through a sprocket 71. The sprocket may be loosely mounted and keyed as at 96 to a barrel so that the drive may be connected at will. A shaft 57 is geared through pinions 58, 53 to an internal pinion 52 on the barrel and this shaft carries governor arms 73 with governing weights 76 which, on a pre-determined speed being reached, applies an inner braking pad 75 to the barrel. The shaft 57 also carries a braking disc 87 with which brake pad 85 can be brought into engagement by a lever 79. Preferably this lever is connected by a rod 92 with the boat, so that its descent can be controlled by the occupants. The barrel may be locked by a pivoted lever 63 passing through a fixed base member 65.
