Abstract
In the preparation of a chewing-gum base by mixing rubber, hard fat or wax, and resin, burnt rubber taste is avoided and a better consistency is ensured by keeping the working temperature always below 120 DEG C. The rubber is mixed with hard fat in a cooled roller mill and the resin with more fat is incorporated in the presence of water in a steam-heated mixer. In an example, 50 parts "latex rubber" is milled until its strength has been considerably reduced; mixed on the milling machine with 50 parts hydrogenated cotton-seed oil (M.P. 56 DEG C.); stripped from the rolls and allowed to stand for a period varying with the hardness of the required product; mixed in a jacketed open mixer heated by steam under pressure with 150 to 300 parts coumarone resin (equal parts low-melting, say 60 DEG C., and high-melting say 140 DEG C.); washed, and the kneading continued with addition of 400 to 500 parts water and 50 to 250 parts hydrogenated peanut oil until a uniform mix is obtained, which may retain 5 to 10 per cent water; the product is then run out into pans. The proportions may be widely varied. All or part of the rubber may be replaced by purified pontianak or jelutong. Chicle may be added. The hydrogenated oil may be replaced wholly or in part by tallow, beeswax, &c. and in part by paraffin wax, cocoa butter, coconut oil, white mineral oil, &c. Other resins may be used in place of coumarone.ALSO:In the preparation of a chewing-gum base by mixing rubber, hard fat or wax and resin, burnt rubber taste is avoided and a better consistency is ensured by keeping the working temperature always below 120 DEG C.
