Abstract
377,522. Thermally-actuated valves. SARCO CO., Inc., New York, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Adlam, T. N. ; 729, West Broad Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Nov. 4, 1931, No. 30605. Convention date, Nov. 8, 1930. [Class 135.] A method of controlling the temperature of a heating element or radiator having an inlet and an outlet for the passage of the heating fluid, comprises changing the pressure imposed on the outlet, and controlling the incoming heating fluid according to the change of pressure imposed on the outlet of the heating element. The general arrangement comprises a steam supply pipe 1, and return pipe 2 from which lead supply and return pipes 5, 6 to radiators 4 having pressure-temperature inlet valves A, B and D. An outlet controlling valve E, or a manually adjustable valve C may be provided. The return pipe 2 is connected to a mixing chamber 8 and pump 9 which delivers to a boiler 3. The mixing chamber is supplied with water from a tank 11 which is connected through a surplus pressure valve with the pump 9. A trap 14a returns any condensate in the steam pipe to the return pipe. A pressure regulating valve 15 of the kind described in U.S. Specification 1,185,347 imposes the pressure on the return pipe as determined by the temperature required, so that an increase in temperature at the location of the regulator causes the valve to open and lower the pressure in the return pipe 2, an element 15a being situated at any desired place, and, in connection with another element 15b controlling the valve 15. An increase in pressure tends to open the valves A, B and D and an increase in temperature tends to close them. In one form, Fig. 2, a double seated balanced valve 18 is mounted on a stem 18a which extends through the lower part of the radiator, and is secured to a contractable element 18b containing a vapour and attached to the end of a perforated cylinder 18c. The thermostatic element 18b is thus subjected to the pressure and temperature of the fluid in the radiator. A spring 19 tends to open the valve against the pressure of the corrugated element 18b. Auxiliary means for manually closing the valve comprise a handle 20a actuating through a packless device 20, a bell crank lever 21 bearing on the valve 18. An intermediate coupling in the valve stem 18a permits the right hand portion to slide freely in an opening 18i in the left hand portion, adjustable stop nuts 18j being provided. An outlet valve 26e, Fig. 6, from a radiator may be controlled automatically by the change in room temperature, by being attached to a rod 26c secured to a thermostatic element 26 in a perforated casing 25a, the rod passing through a corrugated member 27 forming a packless connection. The temperature of a radiator or group of radiators may be varied by distant control apparatus comprising valves or separate return pipes.
