377,416. Sound-proof ventilation; window guards; windows. GLOVER, C. W., Casita, The Byway, Sutton, Surrey, and DRIVER, E. N., 36, Leinster Gardens, Hyde Park, London. July 15, 1931, No. 20339. [Classes 20 (iii) and 137.] Means for the sound-proof ventilation of buildings comprises a wall opening extending from beneath an upper window frame down to a lower window frame, a plurality of louvres 6 across the front of the opening and a plurality of transverse baffles 14 arranged in stepped formation behind the louvres, the lower part oi the opening communicating with the upper part of one room and the upper part of the opening communicating with the room immediately above. In order further to break up sound waves, the windows are formed of pairs of spaced inner and outer panes 1, 2 arranged in V or zig-zag formation. This formation is continued by the horizontal louvres 6 of glass or metal arranged at the front of the ventilation openings 5. Each opening is divided horizontally by a partition 5b of fire-resisting material and the lower portion communicates by way of a hit-and-miss grating 7 with the space immediately behind the window of the lower room. Behind the louvres, in the upper part of the opening are arranged two frames 15 separated by an air space 13, each containing three sets of baffles comprising bars 14 of sound-absorbing material arranged in stepped formation. This part of the opening communicates with the upper room by a hit-and-miss regulator 12 immediately in front of which is a radiator 16 or other heating device. The opening is closed at the top by a metal plate 9 separated from the window board 3 by a packing 18 of slag wool or other insulating material. The window panes 1, 2 are mounted ir metal frames 22 having ver. tical flanges 23 fixed by screws 24 to vertical tubular front mullions 25 and rear mullions 25a which latter are attached to the building by means of radially and rearwardly extending plates 26 The front mullions may be provided with rearwardly extending plates 31 for attachment to steel joists 33 forming part of the floor or ceiling structure. To allow for expansion, the mullions are each formed as a numbei of slightly spaced tubes fitted over tubular connectors.
