377,246. Reflectors. EDISON SWAN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., 123, Queen Victoria Street, London, and WHEAT, H. C., Bloxham, West Drive, Harrow Weald Park, Middlesex. March 13, 1931, No. 7818. [Classes 75 (ii), 75 (iii), 75 (iv), and 126.] Mounting reflectors on lamp casings; lamps, supporting ; electric lamp lanterns; lantern screens.-The trace of a reflecting surface on a plane cutting it in one direction is a portion of a conic, and the trace on every plane at rightangles to the first-mentioned plane and passing through the focus of the conic is a parabola whose focus coincides with the first-mentioned focus. In one form, the trace on the first plane is also parabolic. In the embodiment shown in the Figure, the surface of a barrel-shaped vessel 10, of glass or similar material, is formed by the rotation of a parabola 1 about the chord 2 which passes through its focus O. As shown, the chord 2 is perpendicular to its axis 3, but if required may be at any other angle. Half the surface, viz. that lying between the lines 11, is silvered. The barrel is mounted between two aluminium or other metal endplates 12, 13 packed with felt 14 and connected together by straps which are detachable from the end 13. Pins 17 and a screw 18 secure the barrel to the end 12. A bracket 26, mounted on lugs 27, carries a lamp holder 25. The end 12 has a gland entry 15 for cables. Spill shields 16 are mounted on the other end 13. A sheet metal cover 24 is attached to the ends 12, 13. The lamp is mounted on the fork 21 by means of trunnion screws passing through an opposite pair of the straps joining the ends 12, 13, and is held in position by a pinch screw. The reflector may be made by silvering the whole of the surface of the barrel and dividing it into two or more portions. It may be of thin metal or other opaque material, made reflecting and divided up as before. Reflectors shaped as set forth may be used in heating apparatus. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 7345/07, [Class 75, Lamps &c.], 226,838, and 282,674, [both in Class 75 (ii), Lamp chimneys &c.].
