Abstract

Desiccated sugar beet cossettes are given a pre-soaking treatment in a tank of water or dilute sugar juice to effect a reconversion as to moisture-content of the said cossettes to raw or fresh cossettes, prior to the introduction of the cossettes into the extracting apparatus or diffusion battery proper. The tank is repeatedly charged during the diffusion cycle and discharged to the diffusion vessels. The ratio of pre-soaking liquid to cossettes is reduced when it is desired to obtain concentrated juices. The treatment is continued until the air present is replaced by liquid and the cossettes are agitated or stirred, while avoiding the formation of dust, particularly when in the form of compressed bales or blocks.
