Abstract
A bituminous composition suitable for coating or surfacing purposes, or for incorporating in road-making material, comprises low-temperature tar with a fatty pitch suspended therein in a state of dispersion, and an addition of slaked lime or other alkaline compound adapted to accelerate hardening. Low temperature tar is also found to be a solvent for fatty pitches which may be brought into a state of dispersion by treatment at 150-160 DEG C. with aromatic amines, phenols, pyridine, mineral or vegetable oils, or turpentine, and such solutions serve as adhesives, or for rendering fabrics impermeable, or for surfacing purposes, their drying being accelerated by alkaline compounds. In an example, 2 parts of stearine pitch are heated with 5 parts of shale oil under a pressure not exceeding 60 lbs. per square inch, up to 150 DEG C. for four hours, to give a solution, which is then diluted with 40 parts of shale oil and stirred into 250 parts of tar warmed to 50 DEG C. After cooling, the product may be used in the cold state, or mixed with stone splits and slaked lime.
