Abstract

<PICT:0374055/IV/1> In the two-stage heat treatment of aliphatic hydrocarbons such as methane according to the parent Specification, in which the gases containing acetylene produced in the first stage are converted in the second stage in apparatus having cold walls opposite to the hot walls, the said apparatus is now provided with bodies of good heat conductivity between the hot and cold walls. The apparatus illustrated in the drawing has a cooling tube 2 with inlet 3 and outlet 4 disposed centrally in the heating tube 1. The supply of reaction gas is effected through the tube 5, while the reaction mixture is discharged through the pipe 6. A heating device 8 and heat-conducting filling bodies 7 are provided. Cooling is effected by passing a gas or liquid such as water through the cooling tube. When catalysts are employed it is advantageous to have them deposited in known manner on the heat conductors.
