Abstract

<PICT:0602240/III/1> <PICT:0602240/III/2> <PICT:0602240/III/3> Hydrocarbons are converted by passage through a series of two or more contact masses a, b, c, Fig. 2, separated by cooling and mixing zones d, e, provided with pipes 6, 7 for the admission and withdrawal respectively of hydrocarbon vapours or liquids. The reaction is conducted to such a point that the carbon deposit on the catalyst yields, upon regeneration, more heat than is consumed by the subsequent endothermic reaction. Charging stock is passed into zone a below reaction temperature and leaves it above that temperature; it is cooled in space d by addition of more hydrocarbons to below reaction temperature and passes through zone b, where it is again heated, and subsequently cooled in space e, and so on. If the intermediate additions of hydrocarbon are liquid they should be prevented from entering, the following contact zone in an unvapourised state. This may be effected by fitting a constricted aperture 12a, Fig. 4, followed by a baffle plate 13, or by placing in the cooling zone a layer 19, Fig. 5, of porous material, which may be supplemented by a liquid trap 20. The catalyst beds may be of successively diminished thickness in the direction of flow. Suitable catalysts are described in Specification 519,808. Examples describe the conversion of East Texas gas oil at various temperature ranges between 845 and 993 DEG F.
