Abstract

374,003. Electrodeposition of rhodium and other metals. PRECIOUS METALS DEVELOPING CO., Inc., 54, Austin Street, Newark, New Jersey, U.S.A. Feb. 20, 1931, No. 5401. Convention date, Jan. 21. Addition to 374,002. [Class 41.] An article having a surface of a tarnishable metal is provided with a coating of a substantially white tarnish-resisting metal or metals and with an outer coating of rhodium. The article may be of silver or silver-plate. In an example, the article is first dipped in sulphuric acid or treated as cathode in 5-10 per cent sulphuric acid solution with a nickel or lead anode, using a cathode current density of 10-50 amps. per sq. ft. It is then coated with a thin flash of nickel, treated with acid to remove adherent electrolyte, and coated with a thin flash of palladium. Alloying of the palladium with the silver is prevented by the under layer of nickel. A coating of rhodium is then deposited from a solution of rhodium sulphate in dilute sulphuric acid containing 2 gms. of rhodium and 20-40 c.c. of sulphuric acid per litre. A cathode current density of 2-5 amps. per sq. dcm., a temperature of 80- 100‹ F., and an anode of inert material such as platinum are employed. Cobalt or other white metal or alloy may be substituted for nickel, and platinum or white gold for palladium. The rhodium coating has substantially the same colour and finish as the original silver surface.
