Abstract

373,918. Separating gases by liquefaction. HARGREAVES, T. F., 28, Southampton Buildings, London.-(Frankl, M. ; 234, Ulmerstrasse, Augsburg, Germany.) Oct. 24, 1931, No. 29570. [Class 8 (ii).] In liquefying and separating apparatus in which the gas mixture is cooled by the separated products by passage through regenerators 0, O<1>, N, N<1> alternately in opposite directions or by simultaneous passage through counter-current exchangers with periodic interchange of the circuits of the gases, the quantity of the separated products passing through the cold parts of the regenerators &c. is larger than the quantity of incoming mixture passing through the same-parts. Fig. 1 shows apparatus in which, for this purpose, a part of the incoming mixture (air) is drawn off at the points B, C or B<1>, C<1> and is freed from carbon dioxide by chemical or other means in apparatus H afterwards passing through an interchanger G and a liquefier L to the separating column. The liquefier is cooled by the nitrogen from the lower part of the column which is afterwards expanded in a motor M and returned with nitrogen from the upper part through exchangers R<2>, R<1> to the regenerators. In the exchangers it cools the liquid oxygen and nitrogen passing from the lower to the upper part of the column. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the mixture is delivered partly through regenerators 0, O<1> and partly, after removal of carbon dioxide, under pressure through an exchanger H. A part of the separated product is drawn off from the regenerator and passed through the exchanger cooling the incoming mixture therein which is expanded in a motor M before passing to the separating column.
