Abstract

859,762. Low temperature air separation processes. LINDES EISMASCHINEN A.G. FUR G.m.b.H. June 25, 1958 [July 4, 1957], No. 20421/58. Class 8(2). Crude nitrogen gas withdrawn from the head 12 of the first stage 1 of a three stage air rectification column 1, 2 and 3 is expanded with external work in a turbine 14 and used to cool incoming air. In operation air at 10 atmos.- pheres pressure is divided between a set of three phase-cycle nitrogen regerators 4 to 6 and a set of alternating oxygen regenerators 7, 8, e.g. 4 and 7 and after combination at a point 10 is fed to the high pressure column 1. An oxygen-rich liquid is expanded at a valve 24 into the middle column 2 at 5À5 atmos. pressure and a further oxygen-enriched mixture is withdrawn from the base thereof and expanded at a valve 17 to the third column 3 at 1À5 atmos. pressure. Crude liquid nitrogen from columns 1, 2 is expanded at valves 19, 20 into column 3 to provide reflux. Product liquid oxygen is withdrawn from column 3 through a line 18, oxygen gas is withdrawn at a point 21 to cool one or other of regenerators 7, 8 and nitrogen gas from the head of column 3 serves to assist nitrogen expanded in the turbine 14 in cooling regenerators 4 to 6. Prior to expansion the nitrogen gas from column 1 is warmed in an exchanger 13 in countercurrent to a portion of nitrogen gas bled from the regenerator being cooled.
