Abstract
373,679. Belt gearing. HEINDL, R., 1, A Via Giustinelli, Triest, Italy. March 6, 1931. No. 7003. Convention date, March 6, 1930. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii).] In belt gearing, the belt, which may be of link or rope form, or the V-pulley, or both, carries balls, rollers, or pivoted or rocking segments acting in ratchet-clutch manner to produce a non-slipping drive in one or both directions of drive. The invention is applicable to expanding wheel variable-speed gearing. The belt members 6, Fig. 5, which may be interconnected by links 3, are formed with inclined flat or curved surfaces 8, 8<1> supporting balls or rollers 7 of cylindrical, conical, barrel, or other form centred by springs 9 and engaging the walls 4 of the V-pulley. The rollers &c. move along the surfaces 8, 81 and jam between the pulley walls. Friction plates, centred by the springs 9, may be arranged between the rollers and the walls 4. The walls of the pulley, which may be flat or curved, may be inclined to the central plane of the pulley at less than the angle of friction to prevent the belt from riding radially outwards, or may be restrained from such movement by the pull of the belt. The faces of the rollers 7, Fig. 13, may be struck from eccentric centres, as shown, when the members 6 may have flat faces. In another form, Fig. 15, segments 7 turn on separate or common pivots 34 in the member 6. Radial lugs on the members 6 may engage a slot in the base of the pulley groove to prevent tilting of the belt. As shown in Fig. 25, the rollers 7 and enclosed surfaces 8 may be arranged in the pulley 5, or in both the pulley and the belt. In the expanding-pulley gear shown in Fig. 22, the cones 49, 53 are secured to their shafts 47, 48, and the cones 50, 52 are adjusted by levers 55 actuated by a screwed rod 59. Lugs on the belt members engage in grooves 43 in parts 63 loose on the shaft to prevent belt tilting. One or both of each pair of cones 49, 50, Fig. 23, may be adjusted by a nut 65 carrying a spur wheel 80 geared by idlers 67 on stationary spindles 68 to a wheel 70 also geared by pinions 71 on a bevel wheel 73 to a wheel 74 secured to the shaft 47. Rotation of the wheel 73 turns the nut 75 relatively to the shaft 47 and changes the gear.
