Abstract

Sterilized breathable air is obtained by treating the air with a quantity of gaseous or vaporous germicidal agent adding the calculated proportion of a substance which will neutralize the deleterious effects of the germicidal agent and then removing any excess of the neutralizing agent, e.g. by passing the air through a solvent. For example if formaldehyde is used to sterilize the air, ammonia in calculated quantity is added and the air may then be passed through water or a solution of tartaric, sulphuric or oxalic acid. Alternatively air treated with formaldehyde may be passed through a series of containers the first of which contains ammonia, and the others water and a solution of tartaric acid. Treatment with ozone followed by hydrogen peroxide is also suitable. A chamber filled with air so treated may be entered by an operator and biological, surgical and commercial operations may be carried out therein.
