Abstract

Corrosion of lead pipes and the sheathing of electric cables having a protecting layer of tar, bitumen, cement, &c. is prevented by the formation on the lead surface of a stable lead salt, e.g. the sulphide, preferably by incorporating sulphur or a sulphur derivative in the protecting layer so that upon application a coating of lead sulphide will be formed directly on the lead. Protecting layers of tar containing at least 3 per cent sulphur and applied to the pipe at a temperature slightly above 100 DEG C. and of cement containing a small proportion of sodium sulphide are specifically mentioned.
