Abstract

278,246. Cushman, A. S. March :3, 1927. Culverts.-The lowermost part or invert of a corrugated cylindrical metal culvert is protected from corrosion and erosion by filling the corrugations along the base line with an inert, adhesive, and plastic substance which is free from brittleness when set. Preferably a bituminous substance, such as asphalt, is used. The invert or the whole of the culvert may be coated internally with a paint-like film 21 extending up from the filling 22. It may also be coated externally. The culvert, may consist of a number of sections 1 joined together end to end by butt or lap joints, and the filling 22 may be applied after the sections have been connected together. The bituminous material may be sprayed on, or the culvert or culvert section dipped in it and then held horizontal until the excess has run off.
